SUSTAINABILITY

The strongest institution in rural East Africa is the family. Vi Agroforestry works directly with small-scale farming families. To enable us to reach many farmers efficiently, farmers are often organised in groups, e.g. through PRA-processes. Our extensionists also work with schools in their A.o.C's.  

 

To reach sustainability of knowledge in the society, it has to be anchored in the family. Those who have lived and grown up with agroforestry and the increased production and productivity it means, don't forget. They extend it to neighbours and friends and bring it when they move.   We consider the knowledge anchored in the society when almost all households (80% or more) have knowledge about and are practising agroforestry properly. At this time Vi Agroforestry can withdraw the support. This stage should be reached after five years in an A.o.C. We can then withdraw and establish in a nearby area. From that nearby area we can give a less intensive support for another five years.
